NewsBytes: Mythbusting Single Boomers, Gender-Neutral Anti-trend

1) Bella DePaulo, author of Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After wrote a great piece for HuffingtonPost that busts the marketing myths of single boomers. My favorite one: Peddling Insecurities. As Depaulo puts it: Insecurities are for kids. Many single boomers are living their lives fully and unapologetically. Unless you want to alienate them, speak to their strengths and their real life needs and interests.

2) The New York Times Style section yesterday (June 15th) included a short blurb on a shop that now sells unisex clothing, Assembly New York. The shop’s owner, Greg Armas, is quoted saying that “the selection of ‘anti-trend’ pieces” is drawing male and female shoppers, and he goes on to point out that each piece in his store is an authentic article, selected via a different kind of curation and, “gender doesn’t play into it.” Hmmm, anti-trend is the new trend.

Thanks for the kind words about my post on single boomer myths. The myth you highlighted, about peddling insecurities, was the one that the audience seemed to appreciate the most, too. –Bella DePaulo
