NewsByte: How Women Aren’t Being Served Online

1) Diane Mermigas wrote a very inspired and thorough MediaPost blog post on “women’s sites” and how women are actually not being served by them. The launch of Yahoo’s latest addition to the ranks, “Shine,” was what got her going. Her observations are spot on, and I quote:

In the end, it might be more constructive thinking of female consumers
as comprising many roles and affinities rather than as a gender
category. The spate of new, predominantly general-interest online
attempts to pander to the female psyche demonstrate this point.”

I agree. Women are the most powerful group of consumers, influencing or making 85% of the purchasing decisions, and yet we are dumbed down to content on fashion and Hollywood gossip, dieting and beauty. Exploring niche networks, IMHO, is the way to go.

Andrea, one site that captures the engaging/inclusive atmosphere that women like is http://www.methodhome.com. Simple, open to all, (check the number of female faces on the advocate page, however) PLUS it’s green to the bone. What’s not to love?

That is so right! I have to completely agree. Women are being reflected as dumb bimbo’s that follow the main stream. We are thinking women with our own opinions - not just people with purses who are after the latest pair of boots etc.
