NewsBytes: Online Gaming Women, Hypnotic Focus Groups and Men in the Kitchen

1) Gaming doesn’t attract the young female audience you might assume it would.  Recent research shows: "Consumer product advertisements on Gaming sites tend to perform much
better among women ages 45+ compared with younger females. And
this is not a small audience, says the report. 8.3 million women ages
45+ say they access the Internet to play online games, according to
Focalyst from Millward Brown."

2) If you really want to get to the bottom of a consumer’s opinion about your brand, put them to sleep.  Kenneth Hein wrote an interesting piece on this in Brandweek.  My favorite quote:  "’It’s not like we’re asking people to take off their clothes and crumble Ritz crackers on their bosoms,’ said Fanuele, whose clients include the cracker brand.  ‘It’s about getting emotional content that is so much more vivid and colorful.’"

3) A recent NPD study found that more men are cooking than ever before - mainly in the "grilling" category, but still.  This likely has implications for the marketing of cooking shows, kitchen products and the like.  We can no longer assume that traditionally women-focused realms are still all about women.  Here’s a quote from the Ad Hoc News article on the study:  "While women still prepare the majority of dinners (78% of meals prepared in home), NPD reports that last year men prepared 18 percent of all in-home suppers compared to 14 percent in 2003.  The NPD Group’s study of national eating habits in 2,000 households also shows that younger men who live in a household with others are cooking most frequently."

I can see where showing men cooking in the kitchen would be considered a way to market to women. I know I sure appreciate coming home to a well prepared meal and a beautifully set table. Whatever encourages more men to get into the act, bring it on!
